Open Space, "Guest House," 2018
This May, Open Space will present a series of discussions-as-exhibition under the umbrella of Guest House. These discussions will be moderated by members of Victoria’s diverse communities, including visual artists, musicians, independent thinkers, politicians, poets, filmmakers, activists, and many others… all gathered to investigate questions of hospitality and being a guest. The gallery will be wrapped with chalkboard paint, allowing the accumulated ideas to be written directly onto the space, like a guest book. These discussions will culminate with a day-long conference May 25th, which will see civic leaders, stakeholders, and members of our community gather to take the pulse of what it means to live in Victoria in 2018 and consider the role of art in these contemporary reflections.
Accompanying Guest House 2018 is a reprisal of COPY ROOM, a project by Jeff Khonsary, originally conceived of and presented in 2008-2009 as part of The Langara Centre for Art in Public Spaces Residency activated by Kristina Lee Podesva. The premise of COPY ROOM is one of reciprocity, wherein any members of the Open Space community will be able to make use of a photocopier for free with the understanding that there will be a one-for-one donation of that material to a compilation of Guest House readings. Leading the deposit of printed materials will be our invited speakers. Through the month of May, the gallery will be open Tuesday-Saturday, 12-5pm. Bring your favourite poem, essay, recipe, manifesto, or anything else you can think to copy!
Guest House first appeared as a project at Open Space in 2015 to present a series of projects that explored the nature of space, sharing place with neighbours, guests, family and friends.
