"Alterations" explores the genealogy of textiles as objects, medium and symbol, creating a coherent theme through the shared use of second-hand fabrics. Photographic works exploring people’s relationships to their clothing, and stretched, abstracted textile compositions are shown together to create a dialogue surrounding our relationship with fabric. The exhibition consists primarily of wall hung two-dimensional works and some sculptural objects made from stretched textiles arranged throughout the gallery. 

The fabric selected for the works is collected from second-hand stores in the form of old bed sheets, curtains and clothing. Though their form shifts through their alteration and redeployment, these once-intimate objects retain something of their past roles in their visual quality. The use of fabric as a compositional element is carried across the bodies of work, which fosters a cohesive aesthetic and facilitates the exploration of fabric’s mutability.

Hannah van Adrichem was born and lives in Victoria, BC. She is an alumnus of the University of Victoria, with bachelors degrees in Anthropology and Visual Art. Her work has been featured in a solo exhibition at the Fifty Fifty Arts Collective, as well as local group shows, and is held in private collections locally and internationally. 

Libby Oliver studied International Development Studies and Gender at the University of Guelph. She coordinates community art spaces and has worked on city-wide policy projects that support community inclusion. She has an Honours Degree in Visual Arts from the University of Victoria, focusing in photography and installation art. She currently lives and works out of Victoria, BC.
