Hazel Litzgus was born and raised in Lloydminster, Alberta.Although she has had formal training in anatomical drawing at the Edmonton Art Gallery under Gordon Barry, she is mainly self-taught.
Among her best-loved paintings are the scenes of her prairie childhood. These paintings of small town life, of farm work and play, are constructed from memory, with careful attention paid to details. Her watercolours are executed in a simple, direct style that includes the distortions of perspective fouind in naïve or primitive painting.
Hazel’s work has been exhibited across Canada and the world, including The National Gallery of Canada; Canada House London, Paris, Brussels, New York, Tokyo, Glenbow, and the Alberta Foundation for the Arts. She has also been featured in books such as An Alberta Art Cronicle, Adventures in Recent and Contemporary Art (Altitude Press), Images in American and Canadian Fiction, Prairie Women (Yale University Press), Artists of Alberta (University of Alberta Press), A People’s Art (National Gallery of Canada), Reference Book of Alberta Artists (Government of Alberta), and is the subject of a film in “A Sense of Place; The Canadian Artist and the Landscape of Western Canada” by Dionysian Productions of Calgary.
