Jewish Fairy Tale Feasts, a Literary Cookbook (written by Jane Yolen and Heidi E.Y. Semple;published by Tradewind) is deliciously illustrated by Sima Elizabeth Shefrin. Shefrin employs a unique collage technique, which she playfully refers to as “cut and paste”, a reference to its childlike qualities and to Picasso’s famous quote: “It took me a lifetime to learn to draw like a child”.
The exhibit (opens on October 18 and continues to December 2 in the Sidney and Gertrude Zack Gallery) takes its title, “How to Know a Noodle” from one of the book’s fairy tales.
Sima Elizabeth Shefrin lives and creates on Gabriola Island, BC. She is a well-known fabric and collage artist and has also illustrated Abby’s Birds (Ellen Schwartz, Tradewind, 2006), Latkes (Bob Bossin, Nick Books, 2007) and Once Upon a Bath Time (Vi Hughes, Tradewind, 2010).
