CKG is pleased to welcome Victoria-based artist Birgit Piskor to the gallery with an introductory exhibition of her indoor-outdoor concrete sculptures. A self-taught artist, Piskor is inspired by the transformative power of concrete and its ability to “fulfill both the mundane requirements of civil engineers and the sublime vision of artists.” She has an uncanny ability to channel concrete’s industrial function into sensual organic shapes and textures that defy its inherent rigidity and harken back to artistic forebears like Brancusi or Moore.
Birgit Piskor was born in the town of Calw, situated in the Black Forest region of Germany, but immigrated to Victoria at a young age. Her work has been garnering attention since 2005 when her garden—featuring a number of her unique sculptures—was named “Best Urban Garden in Canada” by Canadian Gardening magazine and was featured in Recreating Eden, a TV show about beautiful sites around the world.
