Exhibition opens on Friday, November 3rd, 7:00–9:00 PM

What do thousands of beach sticks, hundreds of coat hangers and the Toronto Blue Jays’ 2015 season have in common? Under the creative hand of Victoria-based visual artist James Mulchinock, they perform together in A Colony of Things, opening on November 3rd, and continuing until November 19.

Mulchinock’s exhibit features large wall sculptures made from beach sticks; metal sculptures from wire hangers, and large scale charcoal drawings. The works play with scale - emulating both microscopic and macroscopic structures - as well as gesture and repetition.

James Mulchinock takes a childhood passion for collecting and makes it an integral part of his art practice. He gathers, arranges and transforms easily accessible objects—or their residue—such as driftwood, coat hangers, baseball marks. His aesthetic gravitates to objects that are both ubiquitous and unremarkable, and transforms them into unified fields that exist between painting, drawing, and sculpture.

Artist's Bio

The alternate world between geometric form and random gesture drives the art of James Mulchinock. He works in acrylic painting, drawing, and sculpture, and recently completed his Diploma in Fine Arts from Vancouver Island School of Art (2017). Born in Ontario, he has lived in Alberta and BC since his teenage years. He worked for several years as a graphic designer with the Capital Regional District. In addition to art making, he coaches and supports his son who is pursuing a career as an athlete. This sports theme and his beach combing/natural history passion shows up as inspiration in his body of work.
