UK born artist Jane Clark has developed a body of work, both as a painter and as one of Canada’s national poets, that is inspired by the vast and isolated wilderness of Canada.
The Changing Landscape of BC presents a collection of paintings, sketches and photographs in which, after 25 years, she takes another look at northern BC landscapes from a climate change lens.
The artwork presented in this exhibition documents the dramatic retreat of the three main glaciers she visited during her most recent adventure in northern BC: Bear Glacier, Salmon Glacier and Great Glacier.
“Well-behaved women seldom make history,” reads a sign at the back of Clark’s wheelchair. At the age of 91, and after a recent stroke that left her painting one-handed, urgency mobilized her to jump in a helicopter and fly over these magnificent landscapes to critically join the global conversation on climate change.
“With one hand left me from a stroke, I will continue my self-made task to bring the viewer to my work and invite moments of peace or excitement at natures’ work in Canada,” says Clark.
