The title Composition in the Shape of a Pod (surrounded by exquisite detail), references Erik Satie’s, Three Pieces in Shape of a Pear, which was titled as an ironic response to critics who had described his compositions as lacking in formal structure. I was inspired by the structure of a desiccated poppy seed pod that was both symbolic and sculptural. I embellished it to resemble female arbour forms, or Victorian hooped crinolines. Where would this grow if I continued to explore different possibilities in: different materials, intuitively weaving references to art history, the lyricism of line in nature, illusions in reflective surfaces, and humor in the grotesque extravagance of female fashion, especially realized at the height of the Rococo?
