Jeff Wilson: Rolling Canvas & Meet The Artist Saturday August 22,  2-4pm

Jeff Wilson grew up in Edinburgh, Scotland and trained as a structural geologist. He worked in mineral exploration around the world, settling in Vancouver in 2004, and took art classes at Emily Carr University, kick-starting a hobby that transitioned to a full-time art practice in 2013.

Wilson notes that regardless of the actual subject matter in his pieces, his greatest inspiration is generated by chance encounters of light, colour, and geometry. He begins with a reference photo to form the foundation, capturing the spontaneity & movement of a specific time & place and then continues to develop the piece with the inspection and discrimination required by the discipline.

“I want to produce paintings that give you an immediate visual impact. I prefer recognisable subjects, but they can be pretty boring, so I try to capture a dynamic composition & vibrant colours. I dominantly work in acrylics, as they are forgiving, quick and give me the colour intensity I am looking for. I grew up in Scotland and trained as a geologist. I think both contribute to my process & I get great inspiration from close observation of the Canadian landscape and built form. I tend to organise compositions in geometric, structural terms. Often the subject will be those quirky aspects of Canadian life that generally pass unnoticed." — Jeff Wilson
