JG Mair’s “Disassembler” comprises paintings, bas-relief and web-based works. The familiar veers sharply toward the idiosyncratic as the artist reframes commonplace objects within the context of surveillance and data collection inherently found within hierarchical structures. The back and forth between fiction and reality within the visual world has been a consistent theme of Mair’s practice; a sort of ongoing investigation into the idea that what we want to see and what we actually see may be two very different things. The work’s minimal, almost calming appearance runs against the noise stream of today’s world and invites contemplation around dichotomies of humour versus fear and belief versus fact.
Jeff Gordon (JG) Mair is a multi-disciplinary artist who combines elements of painting, installation, video, web and sculpture. He has a BFA from University of Victoria and a BEd(Art) from University of British Columbia. Based in Vancouver, B.C. he has exhibited in Canada, United States, South Korea and Japan.
