The Northern landscape forms an important part of Jim Park's practice. Park has an ongoing interest in the language of paint as a means of exploring both memory of lived experience and imagination of the pictorial ideal. For Park, paintings are the by-products of recollection and imaginative life; the tangible record of mental and emotional experiences. Therefore, as much as Park finds inspiration from photos, sketches, and field notes, his works are equally triggered by an engagement with dream states thus, his images exist essentially as collaged constructions.
Park attempts to resolve the abstract nature of painting with its representational role by finding a right balance between spontaneity and preparation. This process is one that forms a familiar pattern in Park's work. The simplification of a visual idea, so that it read more quickly, and thus has more immediate impact, is an artist's constant aim.
About the Artist:
Born in South Korea, Jim Park grew up in a small city called Pohang. He is attracted to the use of large canvas for capturing the sense of loneliness that may be evoked by situations such as watching the waves crash on the beach. Previously an art director, he has since turned to painting full time. He hikes and sketches on Vancouver Island and a Levette Lake near Squamish, British Columbia. His work is collected both publicly and privately in North America.
