Luther Konadu, "Figure as Index," 2022
In the photo-based exhibition, Figure as Index, Luther Konadu presents an ongoing series of layered and fragmented portraits that investigate the ways objective visual documentation shapes ideas of collective identities.
Figure as Index considers the role photography has played in “understanding” subjectivities and communities, such as through surveillance, classification, and speculation. Although this is not exclusive to black subjectivities, that is where Konadu begins and situates his focus. As an image-maker, Konadu contemplates the legacy of documentary photography while simultaneously creating an alternate past as a strategy to imagine a different future of self and of the larger black community. By highlighting his close community of family and friends, Konadu creates an intimate document of self, and takes autonomy of the photographic medium and the subjects he represents.
Artistic and Administrative Director, Lorna McParland comments on the upcoming exhibition, “Konadu generates an important dialogue on the power photographic documentation has on constructing narratives. Through his artistic investigations, Konadu’s agency formulates a reality on his own terms.”
Luther Konadu has exhibited nationally and internationally and has had work appear in the New Yorker, Aperture, and FOAM Magazine. Additionally, Konadu is the editor for Public Parking; a publication for critical thought and tangential conversations.
