Barkley's process-driven practice explores humanity's relationship to nature and his existential concerns, while experimenting with paint application. His paintings are most influenced by an introspective approach. Barkley's work connects to a range of Canadian artistic traditions. Critics have noted the influence of the Canadian landscape artist Tom Thomson and the Group of Seven, while also recognizing the Automatiste influence of Borduas and Riopelle in surface application and process method. John Barkley has exhibited extensively across Canada and internationally and is included in numerous corporate and private collections.
