John Kenneth Esler and Richard Edwards Invitation
The Ruberto Ostberg gallery is pleased to announce a new visual arts exhibition “Indelible Mark” opening October 20th featuring artwork by the well-remembered Calgary arts educator, widely collected and internationally shown printmaker John Kenneth Esler (1933 - 2001). This exhibition will open along-side “THE LAST PLACE ON EARTH [The Final Depot...]” an exhibit of oil paintings and ephemeral nautical sculptures by Calgary based multidisciplinary artist Richard Edwards. All are invited to the opening receptions Friday, October 20th 5-9pm and Saturday, October 21st 2-5pm.
Having passed in 2001, “Indelible Mark” will bring together a wide selection of Esler’s prints and paintings for the first time since his last solo exhibition at the University of Calgary Nickle Galleries in 1994. Esler’s willingness to experiment is one of the defining characteristics of his artistic practice.
Established senior artist, Edwards also values experimentation and challenging traditional art mediums. He successfully translates his painterly practice onto complex three-dimensional canvases, creating painted naval ship constructions which represent a broad metaphor for industrialization, loss, and destruction.“THE LAST PLACE ON EARTH [The Final Depot...]” will also feature a new series of oil impasto paintings and iconic incased scenes of canoes, which for Edwards evokes the idea of exploration.
