The exhibition opens on Friday, January 17 at 7pm with live music and refreshments.
SheShe situates itself as a self reflexive exploration of womanhood through the lens of an established Canadian artist with a rich history balancing domestic and professional life. Oakes reminds us that to be human is to be animal, inviting the viewer to reconnect with the traditionally feminine parts of themselves. The collection of paintings, tapestries and 3D mixed media work creates a traditional domestic setting in order to elevate it and affirm the strength of that world once held by women. SheShe claims feminine stylistic empathy so that by rephrasing tropes for women, the feminine vocabulary can be raised.
The Artist Talk will be held on Thursday, January 23 at 2pm. Enjoy fresh baked cookies and locally roasted coffee compliments of the Arts Centre, and learn more about Julie Oakes’ artistic process. This exhibition is generously sponsored by Lois Higgins.
