Back in the summer of 2017, Katie took a photograph that was a catalyst for a new body of work. Intrinsically linked to one idea, this collection was meant to explore all of our technical capabilities with different print mediums over three different surfaces.
This fusion of art and ideas was a true testament of Katie and Paul's extremely contrasting artistic styles. The results deserved far more than the confined borders of 55cm by 38cm piece of cotton rag; this collection demanded to be blown out of all proportions. They decided to split the collection into three parts. Like the points of a triangle, each part would be infinitely connected with its sister facets and of equal importance to the overall shape. These intrinsically connected yet startlingly individual chapters of the collection consist of an installation, three pieces on silk, and a paper edition of twenty-three.
“Is it a print?” is a question that they get asked all the time. Whether it be a one off piece or a multiple edition, screen printing is the primary focus and substance of their work. The painting and drawing, careful colour consideration and screen set ups that Katie and Paul put into the preparation of the production of our work takes tremendous amount of precision, patience and passion! The collection has pushed their art into new territory which in turn caused uncertainty to haunt our actions during the setup of our screens. For example, working on the large installation alone took six months due to the lack of distinct outlines in the light and shadow of its composition.
The results of this body of work is simply stunning, incredibly tactile and bids for an in-person viewing to capture its full grandeur and beauty.
Katie and Paul met while completing their degree in Printed Textiles at Middlesex University in London, graduating in 1999.
The focus was to start their own screen printing studio to work within a wide spectrum of the creative industries including fashion, interiors and art. Katie and Paul collaborated and produced their own work on many diverse and interesting projects.
In 2011, Katie and Paul moved to Vancouver, in need of change. Vancouver has been an invigorating and inspiring place to live and create, seeing a redefining, development in their work.
Previously exhibiting at the Vancouver Art Gallery and local art fairs, their work now has once more moved forward. Constantly evolving, technically and creatively, they are producing pieces that include more painting, fine art printmaking and textiles, with a carefully considered approach to design and making.
