With a longstanding inquiry of repurposed and recontextualized interiors, objects, and materials, Lycan’s exhibition, The Fireplace, looks at a host of occupants in the once-residential space of the Burnaby Art Gallery, mediating between the world of objects and the absence of its former residents. Lycan’s works reference previous furniture, decorations and styles that have passed through the gallery (a former domestic residence and monastery, amongst other uses), along with its prior inhabitants. Offering new glimpses of the gallery/home through reconfiguration, as well as drawing on her long history as a set decorator for film, The Fireplace is the staging of a home through a mythical conflation of time periods and stories, set in the present day.
Kelly Lycan is a photo-based installation artist whose work investigates how objects and images are placed and displayed in the world, and the resulting cycle of value they experience. Lycan holds an MFA from the University of Western Ontario and has exhibited her work extensively across Canada and internationally. Her works reflect a deep engagement with materiality, photography and the subtleties of the visual world.
