Screen Time features a mix of objects which all rely on an interplay between reflection and transparency; tracing an ever blurring line between performing ‘ourselves’ and at-rest ‘authenticity’. Beal explores the ways we operate in a series of situational versions of ourselves and considers the ways in which the pandemic has affected these concepts.
“Screen Time offers an interesting collection of objects that challenge audiences to consider the interpersonal exchanges and performances we enact on a daily basis, both in-person and online. This investigation is particularly relevant through the lens of the pandemic, when so much of our existence has pivoted to on-screen engagement” comments Artistic and Administrative Director, Lorna McParland.
The pieces presented in Screen Time reference scenarios where one might be performing, such as a green room, where an actor is in costume but not in character. Or an abstracted mirror that bends space, objects and people into distorted versions of reality.
