Glenbow is pleased to present Ladylikeness: Historical Portraits of Women By Women, an exhibition produced in partnership with Library and Archives Canada. Opening on March 8, 2019, InternationalWomen’s Day, Ladylikeness includes a varied selection of portraiture produced over a 200 year period, with works dating from 1768 to 1960.
Historically, women made portraits of other women to document family, express friendships, assert status and bestow patronage – and to establish professional artistic careers. Featuring both amateur and professional portraits, drawn from the collections of Library and Archives Canada and Glenbow,Ladylikeness offers fascinating look at how these artists chose to work within the genre in different ways, making it their own.
Ladylikeness is the second exhibition in a five-part series featuring portraits from both Library andArchives Canada’s and Glenbow’s collections. Visitors will be able to discover a variety of paintings, prints, drawings and photographs by both amateur and professional artists. For example, Elizabeth Simcoe (1790) by Mary Ann Burges, Demasduit (1819) by Lady Henrietta Martha Hamilton and Frances Adaskin (1950–1952) by Paraskeva Clark.
“These extraordinary portraits encourage us to look, really look, at each other, which is a wonderful thing in these busy times,” says Glenbow President & CEO Donna Livingstone. “We are grateful to Library and Archives Canada for sharing these remarkable Canadian women with us. It’s been a greatcollaboration.”
“Library and Archives Canada is very pleased to share another segment of its portrait collection withGlenbow and the people of Calgary and surrounding areas,” says Dr. Guy Berthiaume, Librarian and Archivist of Canada. “It is particularly fitting that this exhibition celebrating women artists opens onInternational Women’s Day.”
