Opening Reception Saturday, April 6
Concurrent with the 2024 Capture Photography Festival, THIS Gallery will host a solo exhibition of new, largely lens-based work by local artist Laura Clark. Ephemeral Echoes features, sound, photography and sculptural elements to create an atmospheric experience of a graveyard, within the gallery space.
Ephemeral Echoes is a multimedia art exhibit that explores the connection between personal grief and the natural phenomenon of phototropism. This exhibit is an intimate and personal journey through the healing process when confronted with loss. With the tactility of materials and text, Clark delves into the intricate dance of life and loss, where the memory and energy of a departed loved one persist like the inclination of plants toward the nurturing light of the sun as in phototropism. This exhibit is inspired by, and largely created, in a local Vancouver graveyard where the artist has captured images and sounds of life in the moment. It reflects on closeness, connection and what it feels like to be alive.
Photography for Clark is an artistic method to regenerate and revive memory alongside sensations since it has the ability to stop time and preserve the experience. Clark is intending to extract and show the interplay of the absence of presence and the intimacy of our mortal relationship with life and being.
