The birth of the Automatistes movement in 1940's Quebec rewrote the definition of Canadian Art. A group of artists, feeling pressured by the immense restrictions of a lagging and traditional society, found themselves creating a new language, of visual communication. While forging this new creative, ground, they spurred on a quiet revolution in their province resulting in seismic shifts in the artistic, social, and political structures around them. The paintings born out of this movement remain highly sought after by both major institutions and private collections.
