The artworks in Light It Up at Arnica Artist Run Centre February 5 to March 15, offer a direction in contemporary artistic practice that, unlike much light-based art, displays subject matter and cultural references. The works are discrete views into other worlds and provide a complex relationship between the kind of light used and the story being told. For example, Trevor van den Eijnden’s Lawn, uses surveillance glass to multiply the tiny LED lit pink flamingos into a gridded suburbia that seems to extend. Stuart Ward’s works are reminiscent of stained glass windows that feature a kaleidoscope of video views of natural phenomena. Other works: reflect their surroundings while they emit light (Lochead); cradle fiber optic northern lights between the antlers of an actual caribou (MacPhee); use the playful quality of glow sticks to draw the viewer through dance steps (Pinter); and spell out ethnic rejection—no lugar— (no place) in the classic invitation of neon signage (Colín).
