Lisa Lipton’s exhibition in the RBC New Works Gallery features a project that is part of the artist’s exploration into 1970s science fiction. Written in homage to Cordwainer Bird’s Canadian-produced science fiction series The Starlost from 1973, Lipton’s new project, Soon All Your Memories Will Be With Me, follows three characters as they journey through space in an attempt to save remaining descendants of human civilization aboard The Ship Ultimo. Using production methods and equipment from the era, the work also explores the theatrics of science fiction, including prophetic warnings, utopian aspirations and strange voyages, while replacing the traditional male lead that dominated the sci-fi genre with a female heroine.
