Reception: Saturday April 2, 1-4 pm | Artist Talk at 2 pm
Drawing on her scientific background, Lisa Matthias expresses her interest in ecology, natural history and environmentalism through interpretive drawing and printmaking. Her new series of large-scale black and white abstract prints were inspired by repetition found in nature, yet they are evocative of blueprints, city maps and other types of human constructions.
Lisa Matthias is an Edmonton-based artist with a Master of Science in plant ecology and a Bachelor of Science in ecology. After working as a professional ecologist for over a decade, she went on to pursue a Master of Fine Arts in printmaking from the University of Alberta and now works as an artist and educator full-time. The idea that everything is part of a larger assemblage, emphasized by the recognition of patterns and relatedness across species and scales of life, is a central theme in her work.
