Liz Bentley: Lock Up When You Leave
Opening: Friday February 4th, 7-9pm
Lock Up When You Leave is a collection of large-scale paintings that explore the places that memories inhabit, and the residual remains left behind. Bentley's practice explores the intersection of memory, space and colour. Scale is used to re-create environments within which the viewer can become aware of their body in relation to the work. In creating spaces, Bentley tackles the idea of how we perceive the world: interiors are vast or empty; exteriors are constricted. Spaces are broken down and reconstructed, finding new connections. In doing so, the artist represents multiple moments of their past simultaneously - an amalgamation of everything they can remember from a particular period in their life.
Liz Bentley was born and raised in Calgary, AB, and received their Bachelor of Fine Arts (Honours) from the University of Victoria in 2021. Their practice is primarily focused on large-scale painting and photography.
