Though each subject is carefully rendered on a minute scale, from even a slight distance, forms become indistinguishable; individual elements blend together in an all-over pattern of dots, daubs, and hatch marks. In close proximity, details once again come into focus, revealing the complex imagery and narratives embedded within each work. Like the earliest forms of writing, Dupuis’ paintings connect pictures with story-telling in a kind of pictographic language, and each painting rewards intent contemplation with depth, density, and detail.
