'Making Love in a Canoe', part of Lori Goldberg’s True Canadian Series, is a celebration of the Canadian culture through the iconic symbol of the canoe. In the paintings, a vibrant red canoe stands out against a soft pastel palette. The figure depicted forges into the unknown: an intimate exchange with nature that predicates the Canadian identity.
“Nature is a refuge for the urban dweller. It’s a transformative place... A place that wakes up your senses for survival,” explains Goldberg.
The True Canadian Series was born when Goldberg returned from globe-trotting to discover her immense gratitude for Canada’s space, fresh air and water. “I felt a deep sense of pride in being a second-generation Canadian that I hadn’t recognized before,” she says.
In 'Making Love in a Canoe', Goldberg intentionally pushes her limits by experimenting with new application techniques for acrylic paint. “The paint became more dominant and the objects less important,” she says about the creation process. The works, as a result, have a plein-air Impressionistic feel, capturing a sensational moment with all the undefined chaos of real life.
