I must have flowers, always and always. - Claude Monet
The title of this show “Always” is inspired by Claude Monet’s famous quote and his beautiful garden in Giverny, but it is also a reference to my own muse. As an artist who has
“Always” painted botanicals for many years, I feel a kinship with other artists who share an obsession with flowers.
The word “Always” can signify sameness and stability. It implies an on-going process, and when used to describe nature “always” refers to the constant element which is change and evolution. Plants, flora, and fauna are always in a state of adapting, they bend towards light, they struggle even in the worst of circumstances and harsh conditions.
The palette of this show is bright, almost shocking, filled with yellow, orange, reds and deep purple. At first glance, this body of work appears optimistic and for the most part, it is.
However, a closer look reveals softsubtle traces of traumas and tears imbued in the rendering of the brushwork and colour. Burnt umber and pale reds become brooding and crimson. Oranges and yellows are bold and hyper saturated with great determination.
Though my subject matter is very familiar to me with this series my style has shifted towards something more measured. This body of work is more defined, with loose and fluid strong clean lines. The work reflects a desire for control, and even a craving for new direction. This aligns with the principal in art, as in life, that adaptation is constant and creativity is always a challenge, always a struggle, and always changing.
