Known for her gestural take on traditional still life painting, Toronto-based artist Madeleine Lamont has ventured into new territory for her latest solo exhibition, taking on a Canadian cultural icon, the bear.
Lamont sees the bear paintings as anthropomorphic studies of this “heroic beast”. To her, the bear as a symbol is both frightening and endearing, one that projects safety and nobility as well as fear and anxiety. From intimate portraits to imposing full-figures, each bear carries its own emotional weight, ranging from wistful to cantankerous.
