Madhu Kumar, "So far from home life in Canada"

Madhu Kumar was born and raised in India where she received her Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Education degrees. She moved to Canada in 2001, and lived in Toronto and Ottawa before moving to Regina in 2011. Madhu pursued her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Regina with Great Distinction in 2017. 

Her oil portraits, and paintings of horses and landscapes have been in juried exhibitions in Ottawa and Regina. Her works are in private collections in India, Great Britain, Saudi Arabia, The United States of America and Canada.

Madhu Kumar uses her own experience to explore the lives of other immigrant women. Through her relationship with the Regina Immigrant Women Centre, she is able to meet with women new to Canada within their homes, where she records their stories with interviews and photographic documentation. Her ability to identify and empathize with both the joyful and challenging aspects of their new lives has allowed her to capture their portraits in a series of paintings that sensitively reveal something of their personal histories. Kumar notes that, “the paintings help promote dialogue about being new to Canada. I want to offer a glimpse into the life of an immigrant woman during this challenging time. Some show despair; others are more hopeful; while some are more settled.”

Madhu is also involved in David Garneau’s Edmonton Tawanina Bridge art project.
