Catching the light in our community through small social interactions and colour
Maya Rosenberg will be painting a large and brightly coloured landscape to communicate the delight that passers-by bring to the world, as part of the Artists in the Window series at Yukon Artists @ Work June 16-18, 11-2 pm.
She will be drawing from the experience of painting where other people can see her, and where she can see them. She plans to exhibit other landscapes and colour wheels in the other window, part of some new styles of work that she hasn’t shown yet.
Through hues and value, and drawing from the beautiful and inspiring and momentary small moments Rosenberg will seek out the little “nuggets” she observes in daily life, and put them into the landscape.
She will also draw from the opinions and perspectives of visitors to the gallery. She will include text in the painting surface as well, approaching the handwriting itself as colour, line and texture, to communicate the feeling she’s after. In addition to English Rosenberg will draw from her other language, Hebrew, which uses a different alphabet, with more rounded forms.
For her, the challenge will include communicating these things with colour, and working in a scale larger than usual for her.
When Rosenberg looks back at her various projects, she sees they share the common passion of being focussed on community and education, with colour at their heart.
She hopes her painting will show the light in our community in a variety of ways. Exactly how this will do so will depend how the process goes. “I want it to be seen by people so they can realize that they are inspiring someone else even if they’re not aware of it, they have a lot of value they bring to the table whether they see it or not.”
As a guest artist to Yukon Artists @ Work, Rosenberg is thrilled to be part of The Artist in the Window series. For her to appear as one of the artists in the context of this series inspires her. She is in particular a fan of Janet Patterson’s work, who will be working in the window the following week. She sees their work as helping her “sculpt her own voice more clearly.”
