Drawing at times from diverse areas such as vintage photography, contemporary dance, and horror films, Mike Binzer’s paintings explore the human figure as subject in a way that is both representational and abstracted. Elements are both revealed and hidden, creating a veil that changes the interpretation of the human body as image.
Mike Binzer grew up in Calgary studying ballet and contemporary dance and went on to dance professionally with the Royal Winnipeg Ballet for two years before turning his attention to the visual arts. He holds a BFA from the Alberta College of Art + Design and an MFA from the University of Regina, and his work has been featured in a variety of exhibitions and publications in Canada and the United States. Through his study of dance, Mike has developed a unique insight into the human body which has continued to guide his art practice.
