Mike Kammerer, "Structura," 2022
“Structura” is an open-ended collection of evolving artforms. Inspired in part by the way evolution has toyed with the basic structures of life, this body of work is a collection of experiments with the internal structure of art. Each experiment follows a hypothetical lineage; each lineage an artform of its own.
Life on earth developed gradually from the simplest forms, each step a metamorphosis from a previous form.
Artist bio:
Mike Kammerer is a self-taught artist who is deeply interested in science and the natural world. His work is a philosophical investigation into biological life and origins, as well as a formal exploration into the use and possibilities of structure as a medium. Working primarily in wood, Kammerer creates structured forms that are a synthesis of unconscious fragments, music, geometry, and biomorphic elements from the present and deep past.
Kammerer grew up in Waterloo, Ontario and developed a serious interest in both art and science at a young age. He completed post secondary studies in Earth Sciences, and worked in the field for 15 years while concurrently developing and advancing his art practice. He has been exhibiting his work since 2005, and currently lives in Victoria, British Columbia.
