Artist Mikel Lefler combines her fine artistic skills as a jeweller with her scientific background, Bachelor of Science degree, to produce beautifully handcrafted, hand made jewellery.
Each unique piece is made with real butterfly or moth wings, sterling silver, 23 karat gold leaf and crystal clear resin. All wings come from eco-friendly sources.
The “Airloom” collection offers more than just jewellery, each piece is a labour of love for Mikel, and truly an original work of art.
Artist’s Statement
I have been developing my particular, peculiar craft for the last nine years. An avid interest and training in both science and art has driven me to create beautifully crafted sterling silver and resin jewellery with intriguing inclusions: real insects. Bijoux du Monde translates as “Jewels of the World,” meaning that insects are jewels of the world and my work is homage to them.
I have always been keenly interested in challenging conceptions of beauty by juxtaposing what is perceived as beautiful and what is perceived as ugly or unpleasant. My art explores this concept.
My jewellery raises the status of the insect from bothersome pest to object of reverence, taking something ubiquitous pest largely ignored and creating something to be cherished and enjoyed.
