VisualSpace Gallery 3352 Dunbar Street, Vancouver, British Columbia V6S 2C1
This Spring, come marvel at yesteryear’s artistry with a modern twist from accomplished artist, Mariko Ando.
Her latest exhibition, ‘Mind the Rambling Hares’ will feature new work as well as classic pieces from her collection; all of which drawupon Ando’s playful and whimsical signature style, making you feel asif you are on an adventure with Alice in Wonderland.
Ando is a Japanese-Canadian printmaker and illustrator and her designs that revel in nature and magic are sought after by collectors all around the world. What makes Ando’s work unique is that all her illustrations are created using the centuries-old artistic medium of etching.
Etching is an extremely labour-intensive and delicate process: first the artist uses a fine tool to scratch the design on a copper plate, the plate is then dipped in acid, and finally put through a high-pressure printing press in order to make the print.
Ando has been an artist for over 25 years and she has been working in the print medium since she came to Vancouver. She says she loves the attention to detail this form has given her work and how this intricate process makes each print slightly unique.
Despite each copper plate being able to print over a hundred or so designs, Ando chooses to only make 20 or so of each one, making each etching a limited edition. The exhibition takes places at the charming Visualspace Gallery ( opening just in time for Easter weekend) and there will be a variety of prints for sale (unframed) in a range of sizes, and prices range from $80 - $1000. Ando will also have smaller greeting cards for sale and on the 27th April, participants can come to the Gallery and make their own tote bag using one of Ando’s designs.
