Gallery 1C03 presents the group exhibition Moving Images in honour of the Gallery’s 30th anniversary and The University of Winnipeg’s 50th anniversary. The exhibit is co-curated by Gallery 1C03 director/curator Jennifer Gibson and art historian and film critic Alison Gillmor. Moving Images features 23 short films/videos created by artists/artist collectives who have an affiliation with the University: alumni, current/former students and faculty/instructors. Works are shown in Gallery 1C03 on a loop in one of five thematic programs. Each program is on view for one week only as follows: To Make a Prairie (January 12 – 21); The Personal is Political (January 23 – 28); The Haunted Cinema (January 30 – February 4); Women’s Voices, Women’s Lives (February 6 – 11); and Funny Haha and Funny Peculiar (February 13 – 18). Exhibiting artists include Sharon Alward, Scott Benesiinaabandan, Kevin Lee Burton, Shelagh Carter and Deborah Schnitzer, Ervin Chartrand, Roewan Crowe, The Ephemerals, Danishka Esterhazy, Glen Johnson, Paula Kelly, Matthew Kennedy and Conor Sweeney, John Kozak and Howard Curle, Guy Maddin, Markus.Milos.Ian.Fabian, Mike Maryniuk and Matthew Rankin, Ryan McKenna, Solomon Nagler, Freya Bjorg Olafson, Danielle Sturk, Leslie Supnet, BJ Verot and Brad Crawford, and Shimby Zegeye-Gebrehiwot.
In conjunction with the exhibition, Gallery 1C03 is partnering with the University’s Library to present a continuous screening of Guy Maddin and Evan Johnson’s Séances project and a selection of Maddin’s collages in the Library’s Hamilton Galleria (4th floor mezzanine level of Centennial Hall).
Evan Johnson and Guy Maddin will also join Moving Images co-curator Alison Gillmor in conversation to discuss the role of the archive in their films on January 12 at 7 p.m. in the University’s Eckhardt-Gramatté Hall. This event is also planned in partnership with the University Library.
Additional affiliated programming includes two panel discussions. English Studies professor Dr. Andrew Burke will moderate a panel on cinematic experimentalism with artists Mike Maryniuk, Rhayne Vermette and Sol Nagler on January 30 at 7 p.m. The University’s Chair of Indigenous Arts of North America Dr. Julie Nagam will moderate a discussion with Danishka Esterhazy, The Ephemerals and Freya Bjorg Olafson on February 9 at 7 p.m. Both panels take place in Eckhardt-Gramatté Hall.
An on-line publication related to the exhibition is also being planned, featuring texts by Alison Gillmor, Jennifer Gibson, Roewan Crowe and more.
