Nadine Bariteau, "Au revoir," nd
video still
Bariteau constructs a wooden structure reminiscent of a lighthouse where a single bulb pulses at the top, creating an experience of both the light and the dark. The printed words “Au revoir” are used as a formal repetition, a mantra and an attempt to say goodbye. A video performance of the artist in winter holding prints that blow away in the wind, accompanies the installation. The lighthouse is meant to protect against dangerous points, and serve as a navigational aid, and so Bariteau’s piece helps us to find a way through the darkness in a process of letting go.
Bariteau is an interdisciplinary artist from Toronto. Her work is concerned with ephemerality and its role in the natural world. Much of Bariteau’s practise involves the cyclical nature of water and how aquatic ecosystems populate the natural world.
