In Bright Black Starry Sunny Night, Edmonton and Victoria-based artist Neil McClelland takes as his starting point his childhood home in Quebec’s Gatineau Hills. This place becomes an imagined world in his paintings, acting as a metaphor for the sense of belonging we seek within nature and the cosmos. The paintings express the uneasiness and precariousness of our times but also a sense of enchantment, awe, and wonder at the interconnectedness of everything: land and sky, earth and cosmos, night and day, animal and human, and past/present/future. Conveying an unmoored sense of place and time and collisions of the everyday with the sublime, uncanny, or mysterious, the works offer a space for contemplating our place within the greater cosmos.
