Nick Salvador: Building Memories
Building Memories looks to explore the relationship between cities and their architecture through photo collage. Expanses of reflective glass might capture a cloudy sky or the fractured facade of a nearby historic building. Using photo collage as his technique to create what Salvador calls “Buildingscapes,” he juxtaposes these images, so that the lines and contours of one building bleed into the lines of another building. This creates a continuous, undulating, yet disjointed surface.
With the globalization of modern architecture, large cities can look the same but there are always distinct regional differences that set them apart. Rooted in an interest of the "international style" of architecture, found around the world, Salvador examines how these modern buildings - constructions of concrete, steel, and glass high-rise, without ornamentation - fit into the narrative of the city they inhabit relative to their surroundings.
Nick Salvador is a multi-disciplinary artist born and raised in Victoria BC. He began his interests in art with a passion for photography, a practice which he has been working at for over 25 years. His training includes painting, drawing, video, graphic design and architectural drafting.
A Visual Arts graduate with Honours and Distinction from the University of Victoria in 2005, Salvador's art has been included in several group exhibitions including the Sooke Fine Arts Show and various photography contexts. Salvador has a keen interest in architecture and looks for inspiration through drawing and painting to develop his artistic expression with his photographic works.
