Heidi McKenzie: Images and Archives in my Ceramic Practice
Toronto-based ceramic artist, Heidi McKenzie, will discuss her upcoming solo exhibition at the Esplanade Gallery in Medicine Hat, Brick by Brick: Absence versus Presence (April 25th to July 15th, 2022). Her installations draw on over a century of archival photographs of the brickyards in Medicine Hat, the Ross Creek flood of 2010, and I-XL’s untimely demise.
In addition, Heidi will give an overview of her ongoing practice of using ceramic sculpture as a canvas for photographic images, and her more recent explorations in ceramics regarding her mixed Indo-Trinidadian/Irish-American ancestry.
Heidi McKenzie is a Toronto-based ceramic artist. She graduated from Sheridan College in 2012 and subsequently completed her MFA in Curatorial Practice and Art Criticism at OCADU in 2014. Heidi’s work seeks to reinvigorate modernism through abstraction and engages issues of race, identity, ancestry, migration and archive, as well as body and healing. Heidi is the recipient of numerous awards, including the Toronto Potters Biennial at the Gardiner Museum (2021). She has worked as an artist in residence nationally and internationally – most recently at Medalta in Medicine Hat, Alberta. Her work is included in private and public collections including the Department of Foreign Affairs, Canada and the Surrey Art Gallery, British Columbia.
