NIcole Bauberger, "We Can Dance," 2022
We Can Dance is Nicole Bauberger’s newest installation, now on display at Free Space, the gallery in the front of the Northern Front Studio, located in the same building as Blackbird Bakery and Polarity Brewing, where 2nd Avenue turns the corner.
Bauberger invites a variety of materials to dance, including oil paint on canvas and homemade willow charcoal on vellum, as well as less conventional art materials like tire scraps and broken glass.
She describes We Can Dance as a declaration of love. She widens the meaning of dance to include a wide variety of movement and asserts our common freedom to find ways to do this in any circumstances. Her sculptural objects embrace materials with disastrous histories, like the shattered tires and broken glass, using the marks of these disasters as part of the evocation of dance.
Works are often suspended from one point so as to pirouette, or curl up off the wall as if to reach into space.
Her glass works take the form of dresses, a motif Bauberger has used in her work since the mid-nineties. Dresses of found glass have kept her Hillcrest community company in the Dalton Trail Trail Gallery since the beginning of Covid shutdowns, when it was the only open gallery in the Yukon. For Bauberger, a gathering of dresses must be a party.
Join the artist for a closing dance party there June 29 5-8 p.m.
