The word “oneirophyte” derives from the Greek roots, pertaining to dreams and concerning plants–a plant that dreams. This exhibition examines both the consciousness of flora and the dream spaces they might construct, in order to challenge a binary conception of intelligence and wonder whether reciprocal communication might be possible.
If humans were to find plant life on another planet, imagine the lengths we would go to in order to discover what it had to say. How odd, then, that so few humans know the languages of our own Earth-bound plants. In oneirophyte, five Manitoba-based artists working in digital media, including game design, capacitive sensors, and artificial intelligence, accept the proposition that sentience is not limited to the cerebellum, memory is not limited to interaction, and confounded relationships are fertile ground for expansive understanding.
