Pat O'Hara, "Aquatic #2," nd
acrylic on canvas, 36"x36"
From her more representative works of snowy scenes to soft patterns of lines in circular motion and pastel hues, Pat O’Hara’s recent work continues with the motif of strings, but with a higher velocity: the strokes are soft and bright, simultaneously explosive and with strength. There is a visible confidence in her choice of bolder colours, while inserting a playful accent on the white and black strands that stand out among the varying chroma, giving her paintings a sense of grounding. Furthermore, the experimentation with resin gracefully adds luminosity and greater dimension to her work.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Pat O'Hara graduated from Emily Carr College of Art and Design with the Merit Award for painting in 1981. Her process of art making over the past 20 years has included painting on canvas or paper, cutting, layering, collage and weaving canvas. The pieces almost always have an oriental influence and have included long narrow screens, vertical spirit houses, huge vases, leaves, prayer rug collages, carpet related images and tarps with grommets.
Experiences of travel, emotion and environment determine the colour and image of her work. Layering of bright light, dark colours and forms create rich texture. Pat O'Hara states: "The process of art making is a game of challenge, chance and obsession."
