CHEAP ! presents a selection of Lundeen’s eclectic sculptures, textiles, and soundbites that create an immersive experience for visitors, even giving them a chance to control some of the action. For example, The Stooges responds when viewers strike a tall orange parking delineator by randomly playing 1 of 200 audio clips from The Three Stooges comedy episodes. Scandia (as Kelowna residents may surmise) pays tribute to the area attraction of the same name, which Patrick Lundeen says is “one of my favourite Kelowna attractions and further inspirations for these sculptures. A run-down, and never renovated relic from the 1980s featuring a video game arcade, mini-golf… and one of the most hilarious and scary automaton shows ever.”
CHEAP ! will be accompanied by a complimentary zine Lundeen has created, which shares thoughts and images about the various artworks. In addition, a limited edition vinyl record featuring the artist’s original music will be available to listen to and purchase while supplies last.
Patrick Lundeen is an artist, teacher, and musician born in Lethbridge, Alberta. He received a BFA from the Alberta College of Art and Design in Calgary and an MFA from Concordia University in Montreal. He is currently a Visual Arts instructor at UBC Okanagan and the City of Kelowna’s Artist in Residence. Many people will be familiar with his HAPPY DAY FREE GIFT TRUCK project, in which the artist distributes gifts to the community from his “unmistakable truck trailer” parked just outside of the Rotary Centre for the Arts on Saturday afternoons until November 19.
Lundeen has exhibited widely across Canada and the United States, including recent exhibitions at the Alternator Centre for Contemporary Art, L’Ecart, The Odd Gallery, Katherine Mulherin Projects, Confederation Centre, and Wetterling Gallery.
