PAUSE... Whether out for a brisk walk, swimming in a lake, canoeing a set of rapids, exploring a beach or touring a vineyard, I often pause and look for interesting shapes and patterns: dazzling moving water, sunlight softening the edges of leaves, reflections and stunning colour. Natural colour especially in skies and reflections is frequently so surprising it takes my breath away.
PONDER… Sometimes what I have seen or experienced or photographed takes a very long time to emerge in my artwork, sometimes years; but I keep thinking about it and visualizing how I would express the scene or the moment in paint. I habitually refresh my memory by making notes about the essence of the viewpoint that interested me and caused me to pause in the first place. It is this thinking between the brushstrokes that makes all the difference.
PAINT… Simple beauty, expressive colour, moments in time and the expansive scale of the landscape are all strong components of my paintings. Developing the paintings takes time and I am not a particularly fast painter and except for the occasional plein air piece, my main body of artwork is developed in the studio. Canvas size and orientation, the composition, the rhythm of patterns, negative space, paint texture, glazing and colour play an essential role in each completed painting.
Possibly a few of the themes or an individual painting will remind a viewer of a moment they also paused along a path.
