"Surface; the Nature of Painting"
Opening Reception: Thursday Nov 28, 5:30 - 7:30 pm
Staying with the theme of landscape painting, I'm continuing with the subject of "material" and "image". These paintings are examples of works produced at various intervals over the last 2 years.
The layering of plywood, gesso, paint and resin mimic the very topography of a landscape itself. With these paintings I now reverse the order by which they are positioned. Paint is laid over top of the varnish and epoxy surface. The base canvas is etched and stressed to reveal it's texture. The image and material of the "objet d'art" lies in a suspended state. The image is conflicted with a surface tension, unnatural, but sometimes serene.
Peter Hoffer has a Masters of Fine Arts degree from Concordia University in Montréal, Québec. Hoffer's paintings can be found in several prominent public, private, and corporate collections.
