Petrocultures There is certainly no other commodity that commands public attention like oil, from news about the consequences of oil spills to expressions of growing concern about the environmental impact of our CO2 economies.
Petrocultures: Oil, Energy, Culture is a major international conference exploring the social and cultural dimensions of the oil era. The conference will involve 120 scholars and students from across the disciplines and from 12 countries.
Curated by Professor Maria Whiteman (Art & Design, U of Alberta), the exhibit will include work by artists participating in the conference as well as local artists. The opening keynote address by Swiss videographer Ursula Biemann (who will also have a piece in the show) will be held in conjunction with the reception for the exhibit on Thursday, September 6th.
Members of the public will be invited to attend; the event will be free of charge.
