Pierre Coupey: "Field Work"
to
Gallery Jones 1-258 East 1st Avenue, Vancouver, British Columbia V5T 1A6
Following on the series of twenty-five Lake watercolours, the sixteen Field paintings (to date), some started as early as 2010, move through yellows and ochres to a range of greys. The focus is on the field, the field of experience, the field of battle, the field of the past, the wheat fields of the Prairies, of France and of the Ukraine, the opening of the field to notes and languages left as a trace, a blur, an indecipherable script. The lines illegibly inscribed in the paint in reds are taken from Erin Mouré's recent book of poems, The Unmemntioable (Anansi, 2012), a book of texts in which she crosses "borders of culture and memory" in multiple languages.
