Pip Dryden: I Make My Bed
May 6 - June 25, 2022
In I Make My Bed, emerging artist Pip Dryden explores the intimate physical connection between our body and our bed, an integral emotional and physical space we spend much of our lives in. Our bodies are left vulnerable and surrendered to our beds as we sleep. Through the use of materials from the body, including hair and nails, the artist illustrates the connection to our beds, and in doing so reminds viewers of our mortality and physicality.
“The bed is a powerful metaphor for being human” Artistic and Administrative Director Lorna McParland explains. “A bed is a space where we dream, rest, play, and experience a range of human emotions. Dryden’s artistic practice is able to remind us that a mundane piece of furniture that is so practical in nature simultaneously acts as one of our most intimate spaces.”
Dryden’s installation investigates materiality; not just the structural materials the artist uses to create the sculptural work, but the materiality of being human. By embellishing pillows with residue of the body, Dryden illustrates how we are connected to our beds, both physically and emotionally.
