In this exhibition of Medicine Hat artist Poul Nielsen’s soft pastel drawings on paper, the brilliant and saturated colours and lines of his explorations of landscape meld into a passionate and moving abstraction.
Of this entirely new body of work, Nielsen explains: “Light, Reconfigured, is an expressive response to, and celebration of, the extraordinary, light, color and overwhelming space that I experience daily in our unique prairie environment… Ultimately, it is my intention to transport the viewer to a positive and reflective place, transcending the physical.” (Artist statement, 2019)
Poul Nielsen’s artistic career spans many decades and includes 21 solo and numerous group exhibitions of his paintings, drawings and installations in Alberta, the United States, China and Denmark. He has presented lectures and workshops in the United States and China, and is retired from a long career as a Medicine Hat College faculty member in the Visual Communications Program. He holds a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Montana, Missoula, Montana, and studied at the post-graduate level at the New York Studio School, New York, with Philip Guston.
